Pleased to meet you!

"Very pleasantly surprised" was the response of Nick Watts, MARTOR UK's Sales & Marketing Director to the company's recent showing at four exhibitions in the first half of 2010. He added "All the shows were well attended and buzzing with activity. We achieved record sales leads at each show."

The element of surprise, according to Managing Director Peter Ingram, was better than expected visitor numbers and the level of interest in new products. Although anecdotal, he believes the success of the four exhibitions, at Sandown, Glasgow and two in the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham, suggests a recovery from recession is clearly underway. He also gives full credit to the organisers for their success in very challenging times.

High visitor numbers has been a boon to MARTOR UK's 2010 launch of new products and services. Ian Suggitt explains how "Personal service and practical demonstrations are at the heart of the MARTOR UK's approach. Exhibitions create the opportunity for many more people to see the benefits of MARTOR knives for themselves and better still try them out. It was great to meet so many customers and potential customers."

Martor UK are next exhibiting at 2010 Health & Safety in Edinburgh on 15/16th September and 2010 Health & Safety in Bolton, October 2010. Please request a call back for a complimentary ticket or to arrange a site visit and demonstration.

New Improved Clevercut

The long established Clevercut has been upgraded with a new blade plus safer blade change and is now available. Known as Clevercut II the new knife has a manually retractable blade (Safety Index 6) and is suitable for many cutting applications where the blade needs to be kept exposed when in use. The installed blade 45 is 0.3mm thick and has an exposed cutting edge of 11mm.

Made from polycarbonate and polyamide the Clevercut II is 16 grams in weight and only 9.5mm in length, which makes it highly portable.

Is This Your Problem? No. 4

A periodic review of the use of hand held knives in a very busy central distribution centre revealed an unexpectedly high use of replacement blades. On investigation it was discovered that an enterprising purchasing officer had changed to cheaper blades to save money. It turned out to be a very false economy. The cheap blades rapidly lost their edge or broke with the result that the distribution centre was using three times as many blades. Much worse, in terms of costs and staff frustration, was the extra time required to change and dispose of the extra blades.

Martor UK did the review and helped the customer make real cost savings and reduce the risk of cutting accidents.

Martor has always specialised in high quality blades AND with special attention given to blade change methods that are safer, easier and quicker – the vast majority require no tools.

Hints and Tips No. 4 - Follow Good Practice

The best guarantee of avoiding compensation payments resulting from cutting accidents is to follow the procedures laid down by health and safety regulation. This applies to both genuine and spurious accidents.

The procedures are not necessarily anything like as onerous as might be imagined but as case law has demonstrated, when followed correctly they can ensure a zero payout even when faced with a trade union backed claimant.

In a 2001 test case, the defendant, a major UK retail chain, successfully proved 5 points:

  • the risk assessment was correct
  • the selected safety knife from Martor "is a very neat and ingenious device" according to the judge
  • cut resistant gloves were not necessary
  • "instruction, information and training is entirely appropriate" according to the judge
  • there was no breach of 'Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1995'

As part of its Safer Cutting Programme, Martor UK has a generic set of policies, arrangements, documents, training materials and records to help achieve a similar proof of compliance. Request a call back for more information.

Product Spotlight No. 4

Smartcut The popular choice for people on the move, temporary staff or occasional users needing to open different types of packaging including boxes. It is small (just 11cms long), lightweight (20grams) and disposable, yet comes with Martor's semi-automatic blade retraction technology.

With a blade extension of 14mm and a 0.30mm thick blade the Smartcut is totally suitable for cutting two ply corrugated boards and even the occasional tri-wall.

It is also used by many permanent staff when a smaller knife is preferred and where safety policy demands knives with a non-replaceable blade.

Smartcut can be printed for identity and promotional purposes and the handle produced in special colours subject to minimum quantities.

A & A Success

The new MARTego safety knife was the star attraction on MARTOR’s stand at the A&A Health and Safety exhibition in Dusseldorf, Germany from 3-6th November 2009. Visitor numbers for Martor increased by nearly 40% compared with 2007 at a time of no growth for the exhibition as a whole.

The A&A is the world’s largest health and safety exhibition.

MARTOR International Meeting

MARTOR representatives from around the world met for a one day marketing conference during the A&A Health & Safety exhibition in Dusseldorf. A feature of this biennial get together is the opportunity to share and exchange best practices in different countries. This year’s event was particularly successful as more time was allotted in country reports and presentations.

Representing MARTOR UK were Peter Ingram, Managing Director, Nick Watts, Sales & Marketing Director and Ian Suggitt, Safety Adviser.

Product Spotlight - Opticut

Opticut is one of several knives and cutters in the MARTOR range that has been modified to meet a specific customer requirement. In this case the task was to safely cut plastic sheeting with an option to make the cut by either a pushing or pulling action. The most common type of modification is to have knives or cutters in the company’s corporate colours. MARTOR is pleased to consider other forms of customising knives, subject to minimum quantities.

Is This Your problem?

A busy central distribution centre is using hand held craft knives to remove shrink film and cling film pallet wrapping. The film is cut in a series of short strokes which takes time and results in occasional damage to the palletised product packs.

MARTOR provided the solution which was simultaneously safer, more productive and prevented product damage.

Hints & Tips

It may seem contrary to generally held perceptions, but “small is invariably best” for most workplace cutting tasks. Best in terms of safety and in minimising product spoilage, but also in ease of cutting for the operator.

We are talking here about the blade dimensions – length, depth and thickness. The ideal for most cutting tasks is a short, shallow and thin blade, even for cutting tri-wall corrugated boxes. It can all be explained by physics, but seeing is believing. Better still, prove it for yourself with a site demonstration and trial of different MARTOR safety knives and blades.

Product Spotlight No 2

The second in the series switches to the most recent addition to the Martor family, Easysafe – an award winning new cutter introduced in 2008 to meet the demand for opening plastic, paper and hessian sacks plus cutting thin sheet materials in other forms.  Easysafe is categorised as Safety Index 2; a cutter with an enclosed blade.  The ingenious design greatly reduces the chances of thin material bunching up and jamming in front of the blade.

Is This Your problem? No 2

We are a warehouse and distribution centre employing 70 staff opening bulk packed retail products and forwarding individual items to retail customers.  Transit packaging includes double and tri wall corrugated board which needs to be opened with an exposed blade.  However company policy prohibits the provision and use of sharp pointed knives due to the risk, however slight, of a knife being used to stab another member of staff.

Martor UK provided the answer. Call us for more information or request a call back.

Hints & Tips 2 – Always to hand

A common cause of operator frustration and wasted time is locating a knife when required.  Is it on the bench or somewhere else?  Has someone else borrowed it?  Is it covered by papers or folders? The possible list is endless.  The solution is for the knife to be always to hand, housed in a pouch attached to a waist belt.  Of course there is a cost but do the sums for yourself.  If a pouch saves just one minute a day, every day, the reduction in lost time would be around four hours in a full year.  Now compare the cost of lost time versus the cost of a pouch.  And you can count reduced frustration as a pure bonus!

Snap off blades banned

The recently introduced British Retail Consortium Global Packaging Standard bans the use of snap-off blades within a packaging operation. This is just one of four prescriptive clauses affecting the use and disposal of sharps and explicitly says in clause 5.7.12 "Snap-off blade knives shall not be used". The remaining three clauses all under the heading "Foreign Body Control" are also quoted in full.

5.7.9 There shall be a documented policy for the control of sharps.

5.7.10 Sharp blades, equipment and tools shall not be left in a position that allows them to contaminate the product.

5.7.11 Sharp cutting instruments used in the manufacture of packaging materials shall be controlled to prevent product contamination. This shall include control into and out of the factory where they shall be disposed of in a sealable container when no longer usable.

MARTOR UK's Safety Grading System for Knives classifies snap-off blade knives at level 8. MARTOR also has model policy for the control of sharps and stocks sealable containers for used blades.

New Safety Index launched

A new Safety Index for hand held knives and cutters in the workplace was unveiled by MARTOR UK Ltd to visitors at Safety & Health Expo, NEC, Birmingham, on 12 May 2009. The new 10 level index is based on the inherent safety features of individual tools or equipment in which level 1 is the safest and level 10 the least safe. It is one part of a comprehensive programme to provide a quantified assessment of knife use in the workplace. In addition to quantifying the risk of accidents to people, the programme also measures the efficiency and ease of cutting operations, plus the level of any damage to products and materials.

Commenting on the initiative, MARTOR UK Managing Director, Peter Ingram highlighted the key benefits for customers “By providing a quantified and holistic assessment of individual knife uses, we assist customers in accurately selecting the most appropriate knives and related procedures for their specific requirements” An added benefit is that a MARTOR survey and report will help customers demonstrate compliance with regulations and standards such as the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 and British Retail Consortium Global Standards.

Kick off for multi-media campaign

To publicise and promote what is the start of the next phase of its growing campaign to further reduce cutting accidents, MARTOR UK has embarked on a multi-media campaign, under the working title “At the Leading Edge in Safety” The new campaign kicked off with new exhibition graphics, promotional literature and advertising all at Safety & Health Expo supported by the switch on of the new web site at www.martor.co.uk A direct mail and advertising campaign will run for the next few months and the Safety Index will start, from Autumn onwards, to appear alongside MARTOR products in the catalogues of specialist safety and industrial equipment suppliers.

MARTOR Sales and Marketing Director, Nick Watts explained the rationale of the campaign, “MARTOR has been a leader in safety knives and the drive for safer cutting in the workplace since the introduction of its patented Profi knife in 1976. Innovation and investment in further improvements to meet future customer needs aims to keep MARTOR in its premier position. The campaign is intended to create a highly visible signpost for companies seeking ways to become a leader in best, safe practice in the use of knives in the workplace.”

Successful Mersey Meet

Despite the economic recession (or is it depression?), IOSH 2009 held in Liverpool was a resounding success for MARTOR UK. Nick Watts, MARTOR UK’s Sales and Marketing Director added, “The quality of delegates and visitors was also very high. I guess this was because only the very committed and involved practioners could justify the time and cost in such tough times.

Product Spotlight 1

The distinction of being the first product to be put under the spotlight is fittingly the Profi. First patented and launched in 1976, the original Profi has blazed a trail for safer cutting throughout the world. During its 33 years history the Profi has been extended to include 9 variants, mainly to provide different blade lengths but also a model for the food industry.

Used in 56 industrial sectors, for 43 different cutting tasks and all materials. See the Profi No. 07152.

Is This Your Problem? 1

I'm the production manager of a factory employing 150 people in five departments. We convert raw materials into components and then assemble the components into a product for retail sale.

Head Office has just banned all fixed blade knives and snap-off blades and I have been given two months to make the switch to safety knives.

Only when I make a start by checking who uses knives, what kind and for what purpose, do I discover that nearly everybody has a knife, many described as 'the only knife for job' and that I could have a mini-mutiny on my hands if I don't get this changeover absolutely right.

MARTOR UK provided the solution. For more information on how the complete changeover process was handled, request a call back.

Hints & Tips 1

Change blades frequently. When used appropriately a sharp blade is safer, more efficient and better for the user than a dull blade. This statement may be regarded as self evident and therefore doesn't need making, but experience tells us that a high proportion of knife users continue using a blade well after its useful life. MARTOR has always made blade changing easy, but increasingly new knives and cutters are being designed to make it even easier and safer, so it takes very little time to change a blade. Time that is more then made up by more efficient cutting and improved safety. Speak to a MARTOR Safety Advisor for more details.
